I have always wanted to make maki sushi for my bento but I never really got the chance to. Well, not until two weeks ago. Luckily, I was able to wake up earlier than usual (usually, I would wake up at 4 or 4:30am, but that week, I was able to wake up at 3:00am every day so I took the chance.). Plus, my son didn't wake up earlier, too, so I had plenty of time to prepare the rolls. :-)
Anyway, I never thought making sushi would be so much fun! It was my first time and I thought I would have a hard time, but I was amazed at how easy it is to use the sushi mat. The other day, I tried using the mini sushi mold I bought from Saizen but I found it hard to use (I'll still try to practice using it though ☺). Sushi mat or doing it free hand (depends on what kind of sushi you're making) is easier based on my experience alone. I think, next to tamagoyaki, I would have to say that sushi is now my next favorite bento staple.
Albeit I didn't really have a super hard time making the sushi, the ones I made were still not perfectly done. But I don't really mind because still, I had so much fun! And I'll pratice more pa.

So, here were the bento that I was able to come up with two weeks ago.
Heart-shaped
skinless longganisa (done free hand), tamagoyaki, kiwi on a bed of
seedless grapes, and rice with nori toppings. Noticed the banana? Yes, I
wrote an "I love you" note using a tooth pick. I didn't expect the note
to brown as fast as it did. The plan was for my husband to see it once
he eats it in the office. Anyway, it's okay. I just wrapped it instead
with a paper towel so he wouldn't see the message until breakfast. :-P
Chicken adobo, heart-shaped hard boiled egg, seedless grapes with a heart pick and some maki sushi. This was my first time to make the sushi. I just tried and viola, success! Hihi! :-)
For breakfast, I prepared 2 whole wheat tortilla wraps with chicken filling and added some uramaki (inside out roll).
For lunch, I cooked some fish fillet, and added tamagoyaki, crab sticks, steamed young corn and maki sushi.
Munggo, burger patties sliced into big strips and a cube-shaped hard boiled egg. Rice with toasted sesame seed toppings.
I think I went a little overboard here and added too many. Haha! Anyway, this lunch contains rice ball coated with toasted sesame seeds and nori, ham, papaya balls, steamed young corn, kikiam, heart-shaped hard boiled egg and some shikai maki sushi.
By the way, I have been receiving a few inquiries about where I purchased my bento tools. When I first started, I got my first few tools from Saizen in Trinoma. But most of the time, they're almost always out of stock of the items that I wanted to have. So I searched online and I was so happy to find out about Bento Mommas. I blogged about the bento tools that I purchased from them here. Go ahead, feel free to go and check it out. They have a lot of bento items on hand. I'm sure you will love it as much as I do! :-)

You are a wonderful Bento box creator. The heart-shaped egg took my breath away... Such beautiful set up for packed foods. Love it
